What is now known as the town of San Marcos began when Major Gustavus Merrian (descendant of founder of Marriam Webster dictionary) made the first permanent settlement when he relocated from Kansas to the current North Twin Oaks Valley area in 1875. Major Gustavus came to the area due to his wife’s health. He was the first to homestead 160 acres and started producing honey and later grapes for making wine, starting the Twin Oaks Winery.
Nicknamed The Valley of Discovery, San Marcos covers approximately 24 square miles with an average elevation of 590 feet. The influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean gives San Marcos a moderate climate with temperatures rarely falling below the 30’s in winter and above the 90’s in summer. Located just West of Escondido, Northeast of Encinitas, East of Carlsbad and Vista to the Southwest, San Marcos is surrounded by a plethora of varying topography.
San Marcos is home to two large college campuses. California State University at San Marcos is a 300 acre campus and Palomar College is made up of a 200 acre campus. Both colleges are serviced by the Sprinter Light Rail system which starts just to the East of Escondido and travels West to just blockes shy of the Pacific Ocean in Oceanside. From there, riders can take the Coaster Light Rail to downtown San Diego’s Union Station where a day can be enjoyed with all that San Diego and its attractions have to offer.
Old California Restaurant Row is a popular dining destination with 15 resturants to satisfy whatever your appetite desires. Established in the mid 1970’s Restaurant Row’s humble beginnings started as an open food court with outside seating and in 1978 the first full service restaurant was built. With a half dozen breweries and counting, San Marcos offers a variety of micro-brew and dining experiences. Of the many neighborhoods in San Marcos, just a few you may want to check out are the neighborhoods of Lake San Marcos (a resort based community surrounding a voluminous man made pond adjacent to the city and popular with retirees), San Elijo Hills, Twin Oaks Valley and the University District.
San Marcos benefits from having multiple horse boarding and equestrian facilities as well as the existing 52 miles of trails. The annual San Marcos Trails Day Drive is held to help complete the final segments of the 72 mile multi-use trail system, San Marcos offers a great environment for the horse enthusiast. Whether you are a resident or visiting San Marcos, be sure to visit Double Peak Park. With approximately 200 acres of somewhat rugged terrain, you can hike or drive to the top for staggering 360 degree views where you can see the ocean to the West and mountains to the East.
