Located in the San Luis Rey River Valley and previously known as the Pope Ranch, the prior orange grove was developed into a housing community beginning in 1998. Lake Rancho Viejo can be accessed from the West via the Old 395 Highway and Dulin Road or from the North by Hwy-76 & Pankey Road. Lake Rancho Viejo is within minutes of I-15 which is a major commuting artery going north & south. It is also conveniently located to Hwy-76 which is a main commute highway stretching west towards the ocean. Living in Lake Rancho Viejo will put you only about 6 miles from Bonsall shopping, 10 miles to the heart of downtown Fallbrook or a short 14 mile drive to Old Town Temecula which is the gateway to fine shopping and wine country.
With roughly 700 plus homes and counting less than a ½ dozen homes were built beginning in 1990. Starting at just over 1,200 SF and continuing up to around 2,800 SF this phase of homes was constructed through 2005. In 2006, K Hovnanian began building just under 300 homes starting with their model homes on Lake Circle Drive. With an average elevation of 250 feet, the Lake Rancho Viejo neighborhood rests is the San Luis Rey River Valley below panoramic hillsides offering the area a sheltered and private feeling. Rising more than 1,200 feet above the neighborhood to the East is Lancaster Mountain, blanketed in avocado trees and rising to almost 1500 feet above sea level. To the North are the Monserate Mountains with the nearest peak at just under 1,000 feet along with small mountains to the West and East that also reach around 1,000 feet.
